The 9th volume of the series Acarorum Catalogus contains lists of mites of 13 families, 225 genera and 1268 species of the superfamilies Schizoglyphoidea, Histiostomatoidea, Canestrinioidea and Hemisarcoptoidea. Most of these mites live on insects or other animals (as parasites, phoretic or commensals), some inhabit rotten plant material, dung or fungi. Mites of the families Chetochelacaridae and Lophonotacaridae are specialised to live with Myriapods (Diplopoda). The peculiar aquatic or intertidal mites of the families Hyadesidae and Algophagidae are also included.Publishe

Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

Abstract Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

The 7th volume of my series “Acarorum Catalogus” concerns the mite superfamily Raphignathoidea. The 12 families of this superfamily consist of 69 genera and some 1087 species and are being studied intensely, particularly by acarologists from China, South Africa, Turkey, Iran, Crimea and other countries or areas. Some members of the Raphignathoidea are suitable for biological pest control (Gerson & Smiley 1990, Gerson, Smiley & Ochoa, 2003)

The karstic area between the rivers Timok and Vit has about 500 caves and pot-holes, more than 300 of them being the subject of the present study. In this area (called here Western Stara Planina) we have noted 63 species and subspecies of terrestrial troglobites and 17 species and subspecies of aquatic troglobites. The two Regions into which we split the area (region of Ogosta and Region of Iskar) are the richest in cave fauna of Bulgaria. This study deals with the particularities in the composition and the distribution of the different groups of terrestrial troglobites, and especially of such groups as Diplopoda, Isopoda, Coleoptera and others. According to the paleogeographic development of the area conclusions are made concerning the age of certain troglobites and the barriers determining their present distribution

This is the last volume of the series Acarorum Catalogus. We tried to follow the system generally accepted. After the publication of the first volume of the series (Erytraeoidea, Calyptostomatoidea) in 2008 appeared a comprehensive treatment of mites (Manuel of Acarology III of Krantz & Walter, Eds. 2009), in which many changes in the system of Acari are proposed. Acariformes are already a superorder, Prostigmata – suborder, but within the order Trombidiformes. Here is treated first the infraorder Labidostommatina with its only superfamily Labidostommatoidea and the only family Labidostommatidae with five genera and 75 species. The other infraorder, treated in the present volume (Eupodoidea) includes the superfamily Eupodoidea with nine families, including five described after 1979. Treated are also the superfamilies Tydeoidea (fam. Ereynetidae), Paratydeoidea (Paratydeidae), Anystoidea (five families), Caeculoidea (Caeculidae), Adamystoidea (Adamystidae), and Pomerantzioidea (Pomerantziidae). In this volume are analysed 230 genera and 967 species of mites. This last volume of the series Acarorum Catalogus ends with an update of the former nine volumes. Added to these volumes are another genera and species

The modern biospeleological research in Bulgaria started in 1921 in the Ledenika Cave. From 65 caves of “Vrachanski Balkan” Nature Park and its surroundings have been recorded a total of 218 species of terrestrial invertebrates, including 32 species of troglobionts, most of them endemic to Vrachanska Planina Mts. (including the caves near Lakatnik): Isopoda Oniscoidea – 4, Chilopoda – 1, Diplopoda – 5, Opiliones – 2, Pseudoscorpiones – 3, Araneae – 3, Collembola – 2, Diplura – 2, Coleoptera, Carabidae – 7, Coleoptera, Leiodidae – 3. Troglobites are known from 51 caves, the richest being the caves near Lakatnik (Temnata dupka - 10, Zidanka - 7, Razhishkata dupka - 5, Svinskata dupka - 6, Kozarskata peshtera - 5), near Vratsa (Ledenika - 11, Barkite 8 - 5, Belyar - 6), Toshova dupka near Glavatsi - 6 and others
